Laura Farese and Matthäus Zöchling have formed a successful sailing team in the Nacra catamaran class since 2017. Both are from Austria and discovered their passion for sailing at an early age. Their joint career began in the youth class Nacra 15, in which they competed at the Youth Olympic Games in 2018. Shortly afterward, they transitioned to the Olympic class Nacra 17. Since then, they have not only achieved strong results at international junior events but have also secured a podium finish at a World Cup.
Their big goal is to participate in the Olympic Games and win a medal. For Laura and Matthäus, teamwork, trust, and communication are essential components of their success. They prefer to train in Lanzarote and compete for the Union Yacht Club Neusiedlersee.

Laura brings athletic versatility to the team—before focusing on sailing, she also practiced judo and triathlon. However, she was ultimately drawn to the unique appeal of watersports. For her, sailing is special because it constantly exposes you to the forces of nature and teaches you to adapt to a wide variety of conditions. Matthäus discovered his enthusiasm for the sport through sailing holidays with his family. What started as a hobby has now become his profession.
What makes sailing special for both is the combination of physical fitness, strategic thinking, tactical precision, and technical expertise. Looking ahead, Laura and Matthäus hope that sailing will become more popular and that access to the sport especially for children and young people will become easier.
