Our evil eye athlete Alex Luger is a professional climber. The Vorarlberg native is active in all disciplines, but especially in alpine climbing. Because Alex grew up in a climbing family, the sport already played a big role in his childhood. At the age of 11, he finally fell in love with climbing. A formative experience for him at that time was when he was on a climbing holiday in France with his father in the Verdon Gorge, a steep 300-metre-high rock face.
According to Alex, the special thing about climbing is experiencing nature. Being exposed to nature is one of the most profound experiences he has had so far. He would not climb if climbing were an indoor sport.
One of the most important things in climbing, according to Alex, is the climbing partner. “When I´m on the mountain it´s just me and my partner. I must be able to rely on my partner 100%, as he is just as important as my performance and my gear.”
Due to his poor vision Alex relies on evil eye rx glasses, which make a significant difference in his climbing. “Optical glazing made it so much easier for me to find my footing and the right position.”
In the summer of 2022, Alex Luger was able to fulfill one of his greatest dreams. In just one day, he managed the first free ascent of the heavily overhanging multi-pitch route Seventh Direction (8c, 220m) on the Drusenfluh East Face.
